The application of Kansei Engineering in Art
Kansei engineering. Sounds pretty foreign right? Well that’s because ‘Kansei’ is derived from the Japanese word (感性) which directly translates to sensibility/intuition. Hence, kansei engineering can be described as emotional engineering; a method of production that aims to assemble consumer goods by translating the customer’s psychological feelings into the product design. This method was introduced in the early 1970s by Dr. Mitsud Nagamachi, a professor at Hiroshima International University in Japan. Dr. Nagamachi identified an existing gap- companies were searching for quantifiable methods to track the customer’s impression of their products. This lead to his introduction of kansei engineering as a means to measure feelings in parallel to the product design.
The primary goal of Kansei engineering is to create art in the form of products or designs that elicit specific emotional responses from users, enhancing overall experiences and satisfaction. By understanding and leveraging the emotional aspects of product interaction, designers can provide more meaningful engagement for users. When applied to art and design, it focuses on integrating human emotions, preferences, and sensory experiences into the creative process. By understanding and utilizing emotional and sensory design elements, artists and designers can create works that deeply resonate with their audience or users.

A new sculpture has been exhibited at the Science and Technology Museum in Stockholm. "The Impossible Statue," standing at 5 feet tall and resembling a grand awards trophy, was created through the fusion of generative AI and precision manufacturing technology. The artwork involved training an AI model with the works of five renowned sculptors, generating iterative images, converting the final design into a 3D model, and bringing it to life through digital simulation. The result is a gender-neutral figure defying gravity, with undulating metal plates intertwined and holding a globe. This project aims to showcase the possibilities of technology and inspire future generations, highlighting the diverse applications of AI in the art realm
2. Can Apple Take the Metaverse Mainstream?
